How to know the Last Shutdown Time of your PC ? (windows)

In our previous post we have discussed on how we can find when was your PC last turned on, In this post we are going to use the same concept to find the last switch off time of your PC.

It will be helpful to know at what time was your computer previously shut down for some or the other reasons like monitoring the usage of computer by your kid.  Follow the simple steps below to get the last shut down time details.

Concept : In your windows operating system there is event logging system which will log some set of events along with its time and stores it in event log. Now to find out the last shutdown time we are gong to browse through the set of events in event log.

How to find the last shut down time ?

1. Open the System Event Log Viewer by typing “eventvwr.msc“in the run box ( windows + r ).

2. Follow the navigation to Event Viewer Local >Windows Logs > System and look for an event with ID 6006 or 6008.

Event 6006 : As per Microsoft: “This event is written during an expected restart or shutdown after the user initiates the restart or shutdown by clicking Start and then clicking Shut Down, or by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then clicking Shut Down”

Event 6008 : This event will log all the previous unexpected shutdown or restart .

Difference between Event 6006 and Event 6008.

Event 6006 will be generated at the time of perfect shut down before the system actually turns off. Whereas the Event 6008 will be generated for unexpected shutdowns like Power Cuts etc. It will be logged at the next restart time of PC with the previous shutdown time in the message content of the event.

additionally you can filter the events using filter option available on the right hand side and filter the events with event id 6006 and 6008 to find out the last shut down timings of your  PC. Just click on the “Filter Current Log” option available on your right hand side and following window shows up , then enter event Id’s as shown below.

Then all the events are filtered out and only events with event id’s 6006 and 6008 are displayed and you can find out all the system last turned off times including unexpected power cuts.

If you are some have have to track the daily usage time of your PC then there are also third party tools available like PC Usage Viewer which will give you the statistics.
